Meet Annie & Rachel
Founders, Directors & Teachers

The Nest at Hillcrest began with a shared vision: to create a preschool where children are known well, curiosity guides discovery, and learning is both joyful and purposeful. As founders, directors, and classroom teachers, Annie and Rachel bring that vision to life through their daily work with children and families.

Both hold master’s degrees in education. Together, they bring more than 30 years of educational experience, with professional backgrounds that include educational diagnostics, gifted and talented education, and dyslexia. Their experience has deepened their understanding of how differently children learn—and how much thoughtful teaching can help each child grow.

At The Nest, getting to know a child means more than knowing what they can count or which letters they recognize. Annie and Rachel notice what sparks their interest, how they approach a challenge, when they need encouragement, and what helps them feel comfortable enough to try something new. These observations guide the experiences and instruction they plan.

Their approach combines the freedom of play with intentional teaching. A building project becomes an opportunity to solve problems together. A story invites children to ask questions and share ideas. Cooking brings counting, language, and responsibility into a meaningful experience. Throughout the day, hands-on exploration and small-group instruction help children build academic foundations alongside independence, confidence, and friendship.

Annie and Rachel also believe that families are essential partners. Through conversations, The Weekly Chirp, and narrative progress reports, they share the small discoveries and meaningful growth that can be easy to miss in a traditional checklist. They want parents to understand both what their child is learning and who their child is becoming.

Above all, they hope The Nest gives children a strong beginning: a place to feel that they belong, discover what they can do, and develop the confidence to keep learning.
